Are you a plumber covering Sutton?
Use the search above to find a local expert
Coverage: Sutton SM1, SM2, SM3, SM5, SM6, plus KT4 (Worcester Park) and CR0 edges (Beddington / Roundshaw). Confirm postcode coverage when you call.
Common jobs: blocked toilets, slow or backed-up sinks, basins and baths, blocked external drains and gullies, overflowing manholes, sewage backing up indoors, recurring blockages that need a CCTV survey, root ingress in older clay drains.
If it’s urgent โ sewage backing up, an overflowing drain, water not draining at all, or only your toilet blocked โ contact a listed plumber straight away. If it’s not urgent โ a slow sink, occasional gurgling, or a recurring blockage worth a CCTV survey โ you can compare listings and book in. Not sure? Describe the symptoms when you call, before agreeing to any work.
Quick check โ whose blockage is it? If only one fixture is affected โ a single sink, bath or toilet โ the blockage is usually local to that waste pipe or trap, and a plumber is the right call. If only your home is affected, you don’t share a drain, and the outside drain access point is clear, it’s likely inside your boundary โ your responsibility. If more than one property is affected, or it’s beyond your boundary, it may be Thames Water’s to clear free. A blocked road gully is the council’s.
Costs: ask the plumber to confirm a fixed clearance fee before work starts, whether the price changes out of hours, and whether a CCTV survey, root removal or repair is quoted separately.
Availability varies by listing. Some plumbers attend same-day for an active backup; CCTV surveys and drain repairs are usually scheduled.
Gas emergencies: if you smell gas at any point, stop and call National Gas on 0800 111 999 first, before any plumber.ยน

Safety first โ sewage, chemicals and electrics
A blocked drain isn’t usually dangerous, but a sewage backup and the things people reach for to clear it can be.
Raw sewage backing up indoors
Sewage carries bacteria and viruses. Keep children and pets well away, stop using any sink, bath, washing machine or toilet that drains towards the blockage (it adds to the backup), open windows for ventilation, and wear waterproof gloves if you have to handle anything. Don’t use the affected water. Once it’s cleared, disinfect hard surfaces and wash any contaminated fabrics hot โ or have a specialist clean for a significant backup.
Chemical drain cleaners
Strong drain cleaners are caustic or acidic. Never mix products โ combining a drain cleaner with bleach or another cleaner can release toxic gas. They can also burn skin and eyes and damage older pipework. Ventilate, wear gloves and eye protection, and follow the label exactly. For anything more than a minor sink clog they’re often ineffective on the real cause (fat, wipes, roots), and a plumber’s rods or jetting are both safer and more effective.
Water near electrics
If a backup or drain flood has reached sockets, an extension lead, or a wet appliance, don’t touch it. If you can reach the consumer unit (fuse box) safely without standing in water, switch off the affected circuit. If you can’t reach it safely, stay out of the room and call a qualified electrician โ or 999 if there’s immediate danger.
Drains, manholes and confined spaces
Don’t climb into a manhole or an inspection chamber to clear a blockage. Sewers can hold pockets of hydrogen sulphide and methane and have low oxygen โ confined-space work is for trained, equipped professionals only.
Gas
Unrelated to most drain work, but the universal rule: if you ever smell gas, call National Gas on 0800 111 999 straight away, don’t switch electrics on or off, no flames, open doors and windows if safe, and leave the building to call if the smell is strong.ยน
Whose blockage is it โ yours, Thames Water’s, or the council’s?
This is the question worth answering before you spend anything, because in Sutton a blocked drain can be one of several people’s responsibility โ and one of them clears it free.
First, a Sutton-specific point that catches people out: your sewers are Thames Water’s across the whole borough, regardless of who supplies your clean water. Most of Sutton is on SES Water for drinking water, but SES doesn’t deal with drains and sewers. For a drain or sewer blockage, SES is not normally the right route โ call a plumber for a private drain within your boundary, or Thames Water for a public or shared sewer.ยฒ
Your responsibility โ the drain inside your boundary
You’re responsible for the waste pipes and drains within your property boundary that serve only your home.โด Signs the blockage is yours: your neighbours have no problem, your property doesn’t share a drain, there’s no flooding elsewhere nearby, the outside drain access point (inspection chamber) is running clear, or only your upstairs works while downstairs backs up.ยฒ For these, a verified plumber or drainage contractor is the right call.
Thames Water’s responsibility โ the lateral drain and shared sewers
Here’s the part many homeowners don’t know. Since the Water Industry (Schemes for Adoption of Private Sewers) Regulations 2011, the lateral drain โ the section of your drain that runs beyond your property boundary to the public sewer โ and any shared sewer serving more than one property transferred to the sewerage company.โต Thames Water now owns, maintains and repairs the public sewers under roads and footpaths and any sewer you share with neighbours, even where it runs under your own garden or driveway.โด A blockage in any of those is Thames Water’s to clear, normally free of charge.
So it may be Thames Water’s if more than one property is affected, or the problem is clearly beyond your boundary.ยฒ Report it to Thames Water on 0800 316 9800.โถ If they investigate and find the blockage is actually in your section, the engineer will tell you โ they may offer to clear it for a fixed fee, or you can call a private plumber.
(One nuance: pipes connected to the public sewer after 1 July 2011 generally remain private unless they’ve since been adopted.โต Most established Sutton housing pre-dates that comfortably.)
The council’s responsibility โ road gullies
A blocked road gully (the drain grate at the kerb) is London Borough of Sutton’s, not Thames Water’s or yours. The council cleans most gullies every two years, and every three months on roads prone to flooding, and you can report a blocked one to them.โท The exception is TfL “Red Routes,” where gully blockages go to TfL Streetcare instead.โท
The Environment Agency โ rivers
If flooding is coming from a watercourse rather than a drain โ the River Wandle, Beverley Brook or Pyl Brook bursting its bank โ those are main rivers and the Environment Agency’s responsibility.โน Report live flooding from a main river to the EA incident hotline on [0800 80 70 60](tel:08008070 60) (24-hour); for flood warnings and advice, Floodline is 0345 988 1188.ยนโฐ
Tenants
If you rent, report a blocked drain to your landlord or letting agent in writing first; under Section 11 of the Landlord and Tenant Act 1985 they’re responsible for keeping the drains and sanitary installations in repair.ยนยฒ Sutton Council tenants report to Sutton Housing Partnership on 020 8915 2000 as the council’s ALMO.ยนยน
What’s actually blocking it โ and what only a survey will find
Most Sutton drain blockages come down to a few culprits, and knowing which one you’ve got tells you whether a quick clearance will hold or whether you need a camera down there.
The everyday causes, per Thames Water:ยฒ
- Fat, oil and grease (FOG) โ poured down the sink warm, it cools and sets hard, narrowing the pipe until it blocks. The single most common avoidable cause.
- Wet wipes โ including ones labelled “flushable.” They don’t break down like toilet paper and are a leading cause of blockages and sewer “fatbergs.”
- Sanitary items, nappies, cotton buds, dental floss โ none of which should be flushed.
- Hair and soap scrap โ the usual cause of slow basins, baths and showers.
The rule that prevents most of it is Thames Water’s “bin it, don’t block it”: only the three Ps โ pee, poo and (toilet) paper โ should ever be flushed.ยฒ
Then there are the causes a plunger and rods won’t fix, which are more common in Sutton’s older housing stock:
- Root ingress โ tree and shrub roots work into the joints of old clay drainpipes (widespread in Victorian, Edwardian and inter-war Sutton streets) and grow into a mat that catches everything.
- Displaced, cracked or collapsed pipes โ clay drains crack and bellies form over decades, so waste pools and blocks repeatedly at the same spot.
- Scale and pipe-bore narrowing in long-neglected runs.
If a drain blocks again within weeks of being cleared, the cause is almost always one of these structural problems โ and that’s when a CCTV drain survey earns its fee, mapping the defect so the fix (localised patch, no-dig relining, or excavation) is targeted rather than guesswork. A survey is also worth having for a home purchase or an insurance claim. Any drain repair or new connection should meet the drainage standards in the Building Regulations.
Sutton’s combined-sewer and sewer-flood hotspots
Where you are in Sutton changes how a blockage behaves, because parts of the borough are more exposed to sewer flooding than others.
Most of Sutton has separate foul and surface-water sewers, both maintained by Thames Water. The exception is Hackbridge and Beddington, which have combined sewers carrying foul waste and rainwater in the same pipe.โธ In a combined system, a heavy storm can fill the sewer to capacity, and a blockage downstream then has nowhere for the backup to go but up โ into gardens, gullies and, in the worst cases, ground floors.
Sutton’s own flood-risk assessment identifies the wards of Worcester Park, North Cheam, Rosehill and the northern part of Carshalton as more affected by sewer flooding than elsewhere in the borough.โธ If you’re in one of those areas and a blockage coincides with heavy rain, it’s more likely to be a capacity problem in the wider sewer (Thames Water’s) than a fault in your own drain โ report it to Thames Water on 0800 316 9800 and ask them to log it on their flooding-history database, which feeds into sewer-improvement planning.โน
If sewage does back up into your home during a flood, prioritise the safety steps above, then report it to Thames Water for the public-sewer side, and contact the council on 020 8770 5000 for help if your home is uninhabitable.โน
Find a verified plumber by Sutton district
Sutton’s districts cluster by postcode, housing era and exposure to sewer flooding โ all of which shape what a drain blockage tends to mean locally.
Carshalton corridor โ older stock, root ingress, Wandle headwaters
Carshalton, Carshalton Beeches, Carshalton on the Hill, Little Woodcote โ SM5 with SM7 edge. Victorian and Edwardian streets here often still have clay drainage prone to root ingress and cracking, so recurring blockages frequently warrant a CCTV survey. The northern part of Carshalton is among the wards more affected by sewer flooding.โธ
Wallington / Beddington / Hackbridge โ combined sewers, higher flood exposure
Wallington, Hackbridge, Beddington, South Beddington, Bandon Hill, Roundshaw, Woodcote Green โ SM6 with CR0 edge. This is the combined-sewer area of the borough, where foul and surface water share a pipe and heavy rain raises backup risk.โธ A storm-coincident backup here is more likely a wider-sewer capacity issue (Thames Water’s) than your own drain. Roundshaw tenants are managed by Metropolitan Thames Valley Housing rather than SHP.ยนยน
Sutton Centre / Benhilton / Rosehill / The Wrythe / St Helier โ inter-war estates, Rosehill flood ward
Sutton, Sutton High Street, Sutton Common, Benhilton, Rosehill, The Wrythe, St Helier โ SM1 with SM3/SM4/SM5 edges. Rosehill is one of the wards more affected by sewer flooding.โธ The St Helier and Wrythe inter-war estates have older shared drainage where, post-2011, the shared and lateral sections are Thames Water’s. Town-centre Build-to-Rent blocks route drainage through building management first.
South Sutton / Belmont โ detached and mansion-block stock
South Sutton, Belmont โ SM2. Mansion blocks and converted houses commonly share drainage, so a blockage is often a managing-agent or shared-sewer matter rather than a single-flat job โ clarify responsibility before booking. Substantial detached plots can have long private drain runs to the boundary.
Cheam corridor / Worcester Park โ Worcester Park & North Cheam flood wards, Beverley Brook
Cheam, East Cheam, North Cheam, Stonecot / Stonecot Hill, Worcester Park โ SM2/SM3/KT4. Worcester Park and North Cheam are both among the wards more affected by sewer flooding,โธ and the Beverley Brook and Pyl Brook corridors add a surface-water dimension. Pre-war Cheam Village stock can have ageing clay drains prone to root ingress.
What it costs in Sutton
Editorial estimate only, observed across independent WaterSafe-listed and drainage contractors and directories in early 2026. Not regulated rates, not market data, not based on a published cost survey. Sutton sits outside the Congestion Charge zone but inside the London-wide ULEZ, which feeds into local callout rates.

Frequently asked questions
Work out where it is first.
If only your home is affected, you don’t share a drain, and the outside access chamber is clear, it’s inside your boundary โ call a verified plumber.
If more than one property is affected or it’s beyond your boundary, it may be Thames Water’s to clear free โ report it on 0800 316 9800.
No.
SES Water supplies clean water to most of Sutton, but sewers and drains across the whole borough are Thames Water’s.
For a blocked drain or sewer, SES isn’t the route โ it’s a plumber if it’s inside your boundary or Thames Water if it’s the public or shared sewer.
It depends whether it serves only your home.
A drain serving just your property, within your boundary, is yours.
But the lateral drain โ the part beyond your boundary heading to the public sewer โ and any sewer shared with neighbours became Thames Water’s under the 2011 private sewer transfer, even where it runs under your garden.
Yes.
Despite the label, they don’t break down like toilet paper and are a leading cause of blockages and sewer fatbergs.
Only pee, poo and toilet paper should be flushed โ everything else, including wipes, goes in the bin.
Repeat blockages at one spot usually mean a structural problem, not just debris.
The cause is most often root ingress or a cracked, displaced or collapsed section, both common in Sutton’s older clay drains.
A CCTV survey will pinpoint it so the repair is targeted rather than guesswork.
For a minor sink clog, occasionally.
For anything recurring or in an external drain, it’s usually ineffective against the real cause and can damage older pipes.
Never mix it with bleach or another product, and wear gloves and eye protection.
Rodding or jetting by a plumber is safer and more effective.
Keep people and pets clear, stop using anything that drains toward the blockage, and follow the safety steps above.
Then report it to Thames Water on 0800 316 9800 for the sewer side, and contact Sutton Council on 020 8770 5000 if your home is uninhabitable.
Parts of Hackbridge, Beddington, Worcester Park, North Cheam, Rosehill and northern Carshalton are more exposed to sewer flooding.
Sutton Housing Partnership on 020 8915 2000 โ they manage repairs for council tenants as the ALMO.
Report it to them first rather than booking a private plumber, unless SHP tells you to arrange it yourself.

The first job of a good Sutton drainage plumber is to tell you whether the blockage is even yours to pay for โ because in a borough where sewers are Thames Water’s throughout, the lateral drain beyond your boundary transferred to them in 2011, and several wards sit in known sewer-flood zones, the answer often isn’t “get the rods out.” It’s one phone call to the right place.
