Why a boiler repair is always Gas Safe work
When the heating dies in January, the temptation is to call whoever can come fastest. But repairing a gas boiler is, by law, gas work — and the rules don’t relax because you’re cold.
The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 require gas work carried out in the course of business to be done by a member of the HSE-approved class of persons — currently the Gas Safe Register.1 That covers the boiler’s gas valve, burner, heat exchanger and flue. It is not a formality: a boiler repaired by someone unregistered can be left burning incompletely, and the thing that produces — carbon monoxide — you cannot see, taste or smell.
So the first question isn’t “who’s nearest” — it’s “are they Gas Safe registered, and does their card cover boilers?” Ask to see the engineer’s Gas Safe ID card, and check the appliance categories on the back. What actually breaks
Most boiler faults fall into a short list, and a good engineer diagnoses before replacing.
It won’t fire / it’s locked out. A safety lockout after a fault — often a fault code on the display. Sometimes a simple reset, but a boiler that repeatedly locks out has an underlying cause that needs finding, not resetting away.
No hot water but heating works (or vice versa). On a combi, usually a diverter valve — the part that switches between heating and hot water — sticking or failed. A common, repairable fault.
Pressure keeps dropping. A leak somewhere in the system, or a failed expansion vessel. Repeatedly topping up masks it and adds fresh oxygen-rich water that accelerates corrosion.
Frozen condensate pipe. In cold snaps, the plastic condensate pipe (often run outside) can freeze and lock the boiler out — a common winter “dead boiler” call, and often fixable by thawing and then re-routing or insulating the pipe.
Kettling, banging, noisy operation. Often scale on the heat exchanger, but an engineer should confirm the cause before parts or cleaning are authorised.
No response at all / erratic controls. A failed PCB (the boiler’s circuit board) or a control fault. A PCB is one of the expensive parts that tips the maths toward replacement on an older boiler.
The repair-or-replace judgement is real: on some older boilers, especially those over about 10–12 years old, a failed heat exchanger or PCB can cost enough that a new, more efficient boiler is the better spend. A good engineer gives you the honest comparison rather than defaulting to either — and if replacement wins, that’s boiler installation.
Before the engineer arrives, note the fault code, check the pressure reading, remember how often it has been reset, and do not keep repeatedly resetting a locking-out boiler. Report any gas smell separately to National Gas first. A first boiler-repair visit usually starts with the fault code, system pressure, reset history, condensate route, visible leaks, controls, flue route and basic safety checks.
