- After the water is isolated, open the cold taps. This drains the relevant cold-water pipework and reduces how much water remains to escape.
- Protect the electrics. If water is near sockets, ceiling fittings or the fuse box, switch off at the consumer unit if it’s safe and dry to reach.
- Contain and catch. Buckets, towels and moving valuables up buys time.
- Call a verified plumber. If the leak is confirmed on a Thames Water main or communication pipe, report it to Thames Water; water merely appearing near the boundary does not by itself identify the responsible pipe.
Whose pipe is it — yours or Thames Water’s?
This decides who pays, and it’s the single most misunderstood point in a burst. Per Thames Water:1
- The water main and the communication pipe — from the main under the road to your boundary — are Thames Water’s responsibility to fix. If you see a leak in the road or pavement, report it to them.
- The supply pipe — from your boundary into your home, usually running under your garden or driveway — is yours. So are all internal pipes, appliances and fittings.
- Once a leak on your side is confirmed, you have a legal duty to arrange the repair within four weeks.1
A Thames Water leak notification indicates suspected loss or consumption at the property; it does not by itself identify a buried supply-pipe leak. Turn off all outlets and appliances, then close the internal stop valve and retest the meter to distinguish the pipe between the meter and internal valve from internal plumbing.1 If a private-side leak is confirmed, the owner arranges the repair; tenants should report it to the landlord. In a pre-1970 property the supply pipe may be lead. The owner may apply to the Thames Water lead-pipe replacement scheme; replacement of Thames Water’s section is conditional on eligibility, application and inspection or accepted certification.2
Why pipes burst in Putney
Pipe failures in Putney can have several causes, and the failed material and section should be inspected rather than inferred from the area or water hardness.
Material condition, corrosion and joints. Older or altered pipework can fail through corrosion, movement, damaged or poorly made joints, mechanical damage or previous alterations. Safety first
Water and electricity. Water tracking into light fittings, sockets or the consumer unit is an electrocution risk. If it’s safe and dry to reach, switch off at the consumer unit and keep clear of affected circuits until a plumber or electrician confirms it’s safe.
Gas. If you smell gas at any point, follow the HSE steps — no electrics, no flames, open windows if safe, turn off at the meter if reachable, leave if strong — and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from outside.4
Structural water. A large or prolonged leak can saturate ceilings and plaster; stay out from under a bulging, dripping ceiling, which can collapse without much warning.
