What kitchen plumbing covers — and what it doesn’t
Kitchen plumbing is the water-and-waste side of a kitchen:
- Sinks, taps and wastes — supplying and fitting a sink and tap, and the trap and waste below it.
- Dishwasher and washing-machine connections — the supply and waste connections (for a full appliance fit see Washing Machine & Dishwasher Installation).
- Water softeners — usually plumbed in under the sink (more below).
- Filtered and boiling-water taps — instant-hot and filter taps, which need the right supply and backflow protection.
- Waste disposal units and the connections for a fridge ice-maker or similar.
What it isn’t — and where to go instead:
- Units, worktops, tiling and building work are a kitchen fitter’s or builder’s trade, not plumbing.
- Electrical work — a new circuit for a cooker, oven or large appliance — is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations: a new circuit is notifiable and must be certified as compliant, through a registered competent person, a registered third-party certifier or building control, so use a qualified, scheme-registered electrician.
- A single tap → Tap Repair & Installation; a blocked sink or drain → Blocked Drains; a bathroom → Bathroom Plumbing.
The connection that matters most: foul versus surface water
Most homes have two separate drains, and getting a kitchen connected to the right one is the single most important — and most overlooked — part of the job. Thames Water explains that the foul (wastewater) sewer carries water from sinks, dishwashers and washing machines to a treatment works, while the surface-water drain takes rainwater straight to a local river or stream. When a sink or appliance is wrongly plumbed into the surface-water drain — a “misconnection” — that dirty water, with its detergents and food waste, goes untreated into the watercourse.1
It isn’t just bad practice. Thames Water notes that under section 109 of the Water Industry Act 1991 it’s unlawful to discharge foul water into a sewer meant for surface water where separate foul and surface-water sewers exist, and that responsibility for fixing a misconnection lies with the property owner.1 It matters in Enfield in particular, because Thames Water is the borough’s sewerage authority and the borough’s surface-water drains feed the Lea Valley’s rivers and brooks. If you suspect a misconnection — most often from past DIY plumbing — you can check using the ConnectRight tool Thames Water points to, or report it to Thames Water on 0800 316 9800. A verified plumber will connect a new sink or appliance to the foul drain as a matter of course.
Water softeners, filtered taps and Enfield’s hard water
Enfield sits in a hard-water area — Thames Water confirms the region’s supply is hard and scale-forming2 — so the kitchen is where a lot of scale-management happens: kettles, dishwashers and taps all suffer, and many households fit a water softener, usually plumbed in under the sink.
If you do, there’s an important detail. The Drinking Water Inspectorate advises keeping an unsoftened supply to the kitchen tap for drinking and cooking, because ion-exchange softening adds sodium to the water and may risk the sodium standard in the drinking water regulations — and it advises that artificially softened water should not be used to make up baby feeds.3 So a softener install should leave you a hard (unsoftened) tap to drink from.
Two related points round out the kitchen:
- Filtered and boiling-water taps (instant-hot taps and the like) need the correct supply and backflow protection under the Water Fittings Regulations — exactly the clean-water work a WaterSafe-registered plumber is assessed on.4
- Old or lead pipework. The kitchen tap is usually the mains-fed drinking tap, so it’s the one that matters most for old pipes — Thames Water notes that homes built before 1970 may still have lead or old supply pipework,6 common in Enfield’s older areas and worth flagging during a kitchen refit.

The borough’s housing mix shapes the kitchen job.
Enfield Town & the EN1/EN2 core (Enfield Town, Enfield Chase, Gordon Hill, Bush Hill Park, Southbury, Carterhatch). Older Victorian and Edwardian homes with original kitchen layouts, heavy hard-water scale, and sometimes old or lead supply pipe to the kitchen tap — all worth checking during a refit.
EN3 / the Lea Valley eastern corridor (Ponders End, Enfield Highway, Enfield Lock, Enfield Island Village, Freezywater, Brimsdown, Turkey Street). Close to the Lea Valley watercourses, where appliance misconnections matter most; a mix of post-war homes and flats with shared waste stacks.
Edmonton & Meridian Water (N9/N18) (Edmonton, Edmonton Green, Lower Edmonton, Upper Edmonton). Purpose-built and new-build flats with modern kitchens and mains-pressure systems, where appliance and waste connections run through communal structure.
Palmers Green, Winchmore Hill & the N13/N21 suburbs (Palmers Green, Winchmore Hill, Grange Park, Highlands Village). Lots of converted and subdivided homes where past DIY kitchen plumbing is the classic source of a misconnection worth checking.
Southgate, Oakwood & the western edge (N14/EN4) (Southgate, Oakwood, Arnos Grove, Cockfosters, New Southgate, Bowes Park, Hadley Wood). Larger family kitchens, often with water softeners, boiling-water taps and more appliances to plumb in.
The Green Belt / rural edge (EN2) (Forty Hill, Crews Hill, Bulls Cross, Bullsmoor, The Ridgeway, Worlds End). Bigger properties with utility rooms as well as kitchens, and sometimes their own drainage arrangements where getting waste to the right place needs checking.

| Replace a waste / trap or cure a leak under the sink | £70–£150 |
| Plumb in a dishwasher or washing machine (connections) | £80–£180 |
| Install a water softener (under sink) | £400–£900 |
| Fit a filtered or boiling-water tap | £250–£600 |
| Fit a waste disposal unit | £150–£350 |
Editorial estimate only. These figures are NOT regulated rates, NOT market data and NOT a published cost survey — they’re a general guide to help you sense-check a quote.
Plumbing vs full fit-out. These figures are for the plumbing only. A complete new kitchen also involves units, worktops, tiling and electrics — separate trades with their own costs — so a whole-kitchen quote will be considerably higher and should itemise who does what.
A note on vehicle charges. Enfield is inside the London-wide Ultra Low Emission Zone, which Transport for London expanded to all London boroughs on 29 August 2023, so a plumber driving a non-compliant vehicle pays the £12.50 daily ULEZ charge, which can feed into pricing.9 Enfield is well outside the central London Congestion Charge zone, so no Congestion Charge applies.10
Frequently asked questions
No — appliance and sink waste must go to the foul wastewater drain, not the surface-water drain.
Thames Water explains that a wrong connection sends untreated water into rivers, and under section 109 of the Water Industry Act 1991 it’s unlawful where separate sewers exist.

It’s often from past DIY plumbing and hard to spot from inside.

You can report a suspected one to Thames Water on 0800 316 9800; they sometimes confirm it with harmless dye-tracing.
Many Enfield homes do, because the water is hard and scales kettles, dishwashers and taps.
If you fit one, the Drinking Water Inspectorate advises keeping an unsoftened supply to the kitchen tap for drinking and cooking.
For most people it’s a matter of preference, but the Drinking Water Inspectorate advises retaining an unsoftened kitchen tap for drinking and cooking.
Softening adds sodium, and softened water shouldn’t be used to make up baby feeds.
Yes — these need the right supply and backflow protection under the Water Fittings Regulations, which a verified plumber will fit correctly.
No — that’s a kitchen fitter’s or builder’s work, and electrics are an electrician’s.

Why verified plumbers — not a general directory
The riskiest part of a kitchen job is invisible once the units go back: whether the waste actually runs to the right drain. A misconnection can sit undetected for years, quietly polluting a watercourse, and it’s the property owner who’s responsible for putting it right. That’s a strong reason to use someone who connects it correctly the first time.
Every listing is checked before it goes live and re-verified annually: we confirm the business is legitimately trading and verify the named contact, we check evidence of public liability insurance, and we confirm the plumber covers Enfield’s EN and N postcodes before a profile is approved. Because kitchen work is clean-water and water-fittings work, you can also look a plumber up yourself on WaterSafe, the free, water-industry-backed register of plumbers whose work meets the Water Fittings Regulations that protect your drinking water.4
We also keep an eye on customer feedback from across the web, and profiles may be suspended or removed if credentials lapse or credible concerns are raised — see the full verification process →. What we don’t do is tell plumbers how to run their businesses or rank them by who pays most: there’s no pay-to-play ordering and no per-enquiry middleman fee. Enquiries go directly to the plumber.
