Plumbing in a washing machine or dishwasher looks like the simplest job in the house, which is exactly why it floods kitchens — a push-on hose, no proper standpipe, no isolation valve, and a slow weep behind a cabinet that nobody sees until the units swell.
Done properly, three things have to be right. There is a supply connection with its own isolation valve, so the appliance can be turned off without shutting the whole kitchen down; the supply and fittings must comply with the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999.1 The waste may discharge through a correctly trapped standpipe or an appropriately trapped purpose-made sink-waste connection, installed to the appliance manufacturer’s instructions and connected to an adequate foul-water drainage system under Approved Document H.8 There must also be backflow protection appropriate to the particular appliance and installation.
Connecting an appliance to a suitable existing socket or fused connection unit on an existing circuit is not, in itself, notifiable; adding a new circuit is. Electrical installation work within Part P’s scope must satisfy Part P. Following BS 7671 is the recognised technical route for design, installation, inspection, testing and certification, although another properly demonstrated route may comply. Notifiable work must use an applicable Part P route: self-certification by the registered competent person who carries out the work; certification by a registered third-party certifier appointed before work begins; or prior notification to and certification through Building Control.2 Confirm responsibility if a new circuit, spur or other electrical alteration is needed.
The UK standpipe-and-backflow reality (and the US air-gap myth)
Online guides often show US-style deck-mounted air-gap fittings. That fitting is not a general UK requirement; the compliant arrangement depends on the appliance approval, manufacturer’s instructions, the waste connection and the required backflow protection.
The plumber should verify the particular appliance’s approval, built-in protection and manufacturer’s installation instructions. Where suitable built-in protection to Fluid Category 3 is confirmed and the appliance is installed in the approved arrangement, it may provide the required protection. Where that protection cannot be verified, an external Category 3 arrangement such as a double-check valve may be accepted only where the assessed risk does not exceed Fluid Category 3 and subject to the local water undertaker’s agreement or requirements.3 Route and secure the drain hose as the manufacturer specifies.
Testing and handover. Before leaving, the installer should check for kinked hoses, excessive hose insertion, loose joints and cabinet contact; level the washing machine; and confirm dishwasher door, plinth and adjacent-cabinet clearance. Where practical, run a fill, operating and full pump-out cycle, push the appliance into its final position and confirm the hoses remain uncrushed or strained. Recheck washing-machine level after the cycle and inspect for movement, vibration, cabinet contact and leaks while operating the dishwasher door.
Hard-water maintenance follows the appliance, settings and supply arrangement. Thames Water describes the regional supply as hard,4 but dishwasher salt, descaling frequency and any softened supply should follow the particular manufacturer’s instructions, machine settings and measured water conditions. The DWI recommendation to retain an unsoftened drinking-and-cooking supply is separate public-health guidance, not an appliance-installation regulation.5
And the building shapes the job. An integrated appliance in a compact flat may require plinth and adjacent-unit removal before the connections can be inspected. Water rising in a standpipe or sink during discharge can indicate a kinked hose, excessive hose insertion, an inadequate trap or a downstream shared-branch restriction.
