What kitchen plumbing involves

For a gurgling island sink, the plumber first checks for grease or a restricted branch, then confirms the fall, trap seal and ventilation before proposing an air-admittance valve; an AAV is one possible design solution, not an automatic requirement. Appliance connections should be checked for an unopened or poorly capped trap spigot. Before a filtered or boiling-water tap is fitted, the plumber should confirm the available pressure and flow, the manufacturer’s filtration or discharge requirements, accessible isolation and any electrical supply that must be coordinated. After a refit, possible faults include a reversed fall, an unsupported flexible tail, a leaking service valve or feeds and wastes that were disturbed and not remade correctly.

Before the units go back, the plumber should fill the sink to test the bowl seal and overflow, release a full bowl through the waste, run any connected appliance discharge and inspect every joint at full flow. Water around a sink may come from plumbing, but it can also track through failed sealant or the worktop cut-out. In a leasehold flat, the freeholder or block manager may be responsible for a restriction or leak on a shared stack, but the lease, the exact pipe section and the management arrangements should be checked before the fault is assigned. The drinking tap, hard water and backflow

The drinking-water tap. Premises supplied with water for domestic purposes must have at least one conveniently situated tap supplying wholesome drinking water. In a house this is normally located over the kitchen sink, and a direct supply before a softener is preferred where practicable; the permitted supply is not limited universally to a direct mains connection.¹⁸ If a water softener is fitted, the Drinking Water Inspectorate advises keeping the drinking and cooking supply unsoftened because softening adds sodium and softened water can be more aggressive to some plumbing metals.²

Hard water. For Brixton addresses supplied by Thames Water, the supply is hard.³ Scale can restrict aerators and affect some tap or appliance components, but poor flow should also be checked against the service valve, flexible tails and the hot and cold supplies before mains pressure is blamed.

Backflow, drainage and electrics.
