What kitchen plumbing involves

Kitchen plumbing is mostly about the sink and the appliances behind the units. Refits are a common point at which disturbed or newly routed connections begin to leak or drain poorly.

After a refit, feeds, valves, hoses and wastes should be tested under operating pressure before units are closed. To distinguish a supply leak from a waste leak, the plumber can first observe the connections with the sink unused, then discharge water and inspect the trap and branch. Isolation valves should be tested, and appliance hoses and flexible tap tails checked for twisting, abrasion or excessive bending while the appliance is running and before it is pushed fully back. Before fitting a boiling-water or specialist filtered tap, the available pressure, flow and accessible isolation should also be confirmed.

The drinking tap, hard water and backflow

The drinking-water tap. The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 require at least one conveniently situated tap from which wholesome water can be drawn for drinking; the permitted supply is not limited to a tap directly connected to the mains or located at the kitchen sink.1 If a water softener is fitted, the Drinking Water Inspectorate advises retaining an unsoftened supply to the kitchen tap used for drinking and cooking because ion-exchange softeners add sodium and softened water may be unsuitable in some circumstances.2

Hard water. Welling is in Thames Water’s hard-water region,3 so limescale can affect aerators, tap cartridges and water-using appliances. A fused spur added to an existing kitchen circuit is generally non-notifiable unless another notifiable category applies. All electrical work must comply with Part P; designing and testing it to the current BS 7671 is the standard route to demonstrating compliance.6
