Cold radiators, sludge and what’s actually wrong

A cold radiator, noisy circuit or no-heat complaint can arise from air, poor balancing, a closed or failed valve, pump or control faults, a leak, boiler-side faults or corrosion debris. Cold-at-the-bottom radiators can indicate magnetite sludge, but temperature, flow, valve and balancing checks are needed before that becomes a diagnosis. Magnetite is black iron-oxide debris produced by corrosion of ferrous components in the sealed heating circuit.

A verified heating engineer should diagnose before recommending a flush: check boiler flow temperature, system pressure, pump operation, motorised valves, TRVs, bypasses, thermostats and zoning controls; compare flow and return temperatures; inspect for visible leaks; and test circulation and balancing. Pressure loss may come from a visible system leak or from expansion-vessel, pressure-relief or boiler-component faults. Where water condition indicates it, cleaning, inhibitor and filtration should follow BS 7593:2019+A1:2024.1 A first visit may resolve balancing, air, controls or an accessible valve fault; parts, extended testing or agreed access may require a further visit. Scale and corrosion are separate issues
